Dr Ferguson, who began performing knee surgery in the region in 2016, said the milestone came as a pleasant surprise with his focus firmly on his patients’ needs.

“Reaching the milestone of 1,000 knee replacements is both humbling and rewarding. I don't usually focus on the numbers, so it came as a pleasant surprise. It's a privilege to help so many people regain their mobility and independence,” Dr Ferguson said.

“Performing my first procedure was both exciting and daunting—the culmination of years of training leading up to that moment when I was solely responsible. Fast forward to procedure 1,000, the feeling has evolved into a blend of confidence and continuous learning.

“Technological advancements have been significant, at Armidale Private Hospital, we're fortunate to utilize the Mako robotic system. This cutting-edge technology allows me to fine-tune each knee replacement to perfectly match the patient's unique anatomy, designed to enhance outcomes and potentially reduce recovery times.”

Dr Ferguson said the milestone achievement wasn’t his alone, but a testament to the team around him at Armidale Private Hospital.

“I can't express enough gratitude for the incredible nursing, theatre, allied health and support staff who've been integral to this journey. Their expertise, dedication, and compassion make all the difference in patient care. Every successful procedure is a collective achievement, and I'm fortunate to collaborate with such a talented and committed team here in Armidale. Together, we've built an environment where patient well-being is our utmost priority, and that’s something I'm immensely proud of. I look forward to the next 1000.”
