New surgical robot doubles Cairns Private Hospital’s capacity for robotic-assisted joint surgeries

August 26, 2025

Cairns Private Hospital has strengthened its commitment to innovation in patient care, with the arrival of a second ROSA orthopaedic robot—doubling the hospital’s capacity to deliver robotic-assisted knee replacements.

Used in both partial and total knee replacement surgeries, the ROSA robot is designed to help surgeons plan and perform procedures with greater precision. The addition of a second unit means Far North Queensland patients will now have improved access to this advanced technology.

Cairns Private Hospital introduced its first ROSA robot in late 2021, which has to-date been used in more than 1,000 procedures.

Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Ben Parkinson, said the robotic surgical assistant represents the next evolution in surgical tools, building on two decades of computer-navigated joint replacement techniques.

“Robotic surgical assistants are designed to improve surgical precision compared to traditional techniques, by providing more detailed feedback and flexibility during procedures,” Dr Parkinson said.

“The ROSA system provides the surgeon information during a procedure on how the prosthetic knee functions, allowing us to fine tune and adjust the implant position in real time. It’s a reliable and reproducible tool to help achieve surgical goals.

“Having a second ROSA unit at Cairns Private allows for multiple knee replacements on the same day and allows more surgeons to access the technology for their patients. I am grateful for Ramsay’s investment and support in bringing this technology to our region.”

Cairns Private Hospital CEO, Rochelle Biancotti, said the decision to invest in a second ROSA unit reflects Ramsay Health Care’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to world-class care in Far North Queensland.

“We are proud to support our local surgeons with the latest in surgical technology and to give more patients the opportunity to benefit from robotic-assisted procedures,” Ms Biancotti said.

“The introduction of a second ROSA robot is part of our broader strategy to meet growing demand for joint replacement surgery and continue delivering safe, modern, high-quality care close to home.”

The hospital will further boost its suite of robotic technology later this year with the introduction of a MAKO robot. The MAKO will join the two ROSA devices and a VELYS robotic assistant, for use during orthopaedic procedures. Cairns Private Hospital also offers a Da Vinci Xi robotic device, used in selected urological, gynaecological and colorectal procedures.
