The centre is the first hospital in the Sutherland Shire to introduce the Alcon Unity surgical system, expanding access to specialist eye surgery locally and reducing the need for many patients to travel outside the region for treatment. 

The new technology allows surgeons to perform complex vitreoretinal procedures to treat serious eye conditions, including some that can threaten a person’s sight. The system is designed to support greater surgical precision and efficiency, helping improve patient outcomes and recovery. 

Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda expects the technology will support the treatment of hundreds of patients each year, significantly improving access to specialist eye care for the local community. 

Ophthalmologist Dr James Leong said the new technology represents an important step forward in delivering advanced eye care within the region. 

“Being able to deliver this level of care locally is incredibly important,” Dr Leong said.  

“It means patients can receive advanced treatment closer to home, supported by a familiar care team, which makes a real difference to their experience and recovery.” 

Seven ophthalmologists credentialed at Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda are now using the technology, expanding the centre’s ability to provide specialist eye surgery for patients across the region. 

The investment reflects Ramsay Health Care’s ongoing commitment to improving access to safe, high-quality care and investing in services that support the needs of local communities. 

Since opening more than a decade ago, Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda has supported thousands of patients to access day surgery services across a range of specialties including eye surgery, gastroenterology, urology and general surgery. 

The centre continues to invest in new technology and service expansion to meet growing demand and evolving healthcare needs across the Sutherland Shire community.
