Paws for thought: Joondalup Emergency Nurse and canine companion Oscar champion mental health support for frontline workers

June 09, 2026

After 15 years as an Emergency Department nurse at Joondalup Health Campus (JHC), Fiona Henderson has seen and experienced the impact of regular exposure to critical incidents.

“First responders move rapidly between situations that often deal with trauma, pain and fear, all while remaining calm and putting our patients first. We work under extreme pressure which can lead to burnout and a decline in our mental health unless we take steps to look after ourselves,” she said.

When the opportunity came to give back to her profession through Dogs for First Responders (D41R), Fiona and her furry companion Oscar jumped at the chance.

The mobile service visits workplaces and offers frontline staff a chance to open up about their mental wellbeing while being comforted by trained therapy dogs.

“We started volunteering with D41R in 2024. The specialist support they provide makes people feel safe and allows them to decompress without judgement. Oscar helps create a space for them to soften and breathe,” Fiona said.

Mary McConnell, Deputy Director of Clinical Services – Emergency, said programs like D41R give staff a rare moment during busy shifts to let their guard down and relax.

“The unconditional love and comfort from dogs bring them joy. It offers an opportunity to take a couple of minutes for themselves to interact with a beautiful animal which provides a lovely therapeutic distraction from the pressures of their roles.”

All handlers at D41R have experience understanding the unique challenges of frontline work and are trained in mental health first aid. JHC’s Emergency Department regularly hosts the support service, as a way for staff to communicate their feelings without pressure.

“When we care for first responders, we’re strengthening the care they give to everyone else,” said Fiona.
